In 2016 I retired after turning 65 and I'm now enjoying more leisure time for taking Adult Continuing Education Classes, playing Bridge, and playing guitar and ukulele.

Since early 2014 I have been working with GnuCOBOL (formerly OpenCOBOL), which is a free, open source COBOL compiler for GNU/Linux, Mac, and Windows. Please see the "GnuCOBOL/OpenCOBOL Downloads, Binaries, and Links" page below.

I have recently added several new downloads for GnuCOBOL 3.2 Release Candidate 2 and MSYS2 or MinGW build guides. There are also updated versions of GnuCOBOL 3.1.2 and an MSYS2 64-bit version of GnuCOBOL 3.1.2. Older GnuCOBOL 2.2 and 2.0 Release Candidate 2 downloads are still available, but some earlier releases of GnuCOBOL 2.0 (Release Candidate 1 and earlier) have been removed. An installer for OpenCOBOL 1.1 is still available on that page.

The updated MinGW 32-bit downloads available are GnuCOBOL 3.1.2 (23Dec2020), in BDB, VBISAM, and NO-ISAM versions. The binaries have also been rebuilt to use GMP 6.2.1 and PDCursesMod 4.3.5/wincon for screen access. Also, the MinGW base was upgraded from GCC 6.3.0 to 9.2.0, and GnuCOBOL manuals are now included in the downloads.

For anyone who might be interested, I have a version of the Unix CAL.EXE calendar utility, reimplemented in PowerBasic as PBCAL.EXE for 32-bit or 64-bit Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.
PBCAL.ZIP for Windows XP and higher

As of Sun-21-Feb-2010, I have moved my pages to 50Webs.com, since my previous provider no longer supports free personal web pages. I can also be found on LinkedIn and Facebook.

In 2007 I replaced Netscape Navigator with Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird as my default browser and default mail/news reader.

Occasionally I receive emails from programmers in India with COBOL questions, which is very gratifying to me. I hope the comments I provide to other working programmers are helpful.

For original work, I recommend my page on "COBOL Runtime Efficiency", which includes links to some additional performance anecdotes (including Leif Svalgaard's excellent article on Sorting Algorithms). The Programming Resources page has been updated to include links to GnuCOBOL/OpenCOBOL. There is also a sample COBOL program for converting IBM OS/VS COBOL source code to IBM VS/COBOL II source code.

You can read about distributed denial of service attacks at the Gibson Research Corporation website. I recommend this site to anyone with concerns about Internet privacy and security.
